Lake of the Ozarks Polar Bear Plunge 2011

Are you ready for largest wintertime fundraiser to be held at the Lake of the Ozarks? The 16th annual Polar Bear Plunge, hosted by the Osage Beach Police Department and the City of Osage Beach to benefit the Special Olympics Missouri will be held on February 25, 2012. Along with the plunge several events are being held in conjunction with the Plunge.

There have been a couple of changes this year the event is now called the Ã¢ï¿½ï¿½Polar PlungeÃ¢ï¿½ï¿½ and a special category that has been added for schools.

This event is wildly popular and has been very successful in raising money. Last year, the event raised more than $170,000. There were 500 plungers who dipped into chilly Lake of the Ozarks and 150 Ã¢ï¿½ï¿½struttersÃ¢ï¿½ï¿½ who ran or walked the 3.1 mile course behind the Osage Beach City Hall.

The Cool School category is new this year. Schools can build their teams and compete for the Cool School.

School of the Osage students, teachers, and community members are forming a team. To join the team, visit the website, click on Polar Bear Plunge, register your information as a new member, and join an existing team (School of the Osage) under the search Osage. Later, someone will contact you with further information.

School of the Osage team members will be holding a fundraiser for the event from Jan 10 to Feb. 19. Members of the School of the Osage Polar Bear Plunge team will randomly place a decorated toilet in someoneÃ¢ï¿½ï¿½s yard. To remove the toilet, a $5 minimum donation will be asked. To place the toilet in someoneÃ¢ï¿½ï¿½s yard, a $10 minimum donation will be asked. If you would like to brighten someoneÃ¢ï¿½ï¿½s morning with a surprise toilet, contact Gwen DeVaul at or at 573-723-0198 and leave a message with your name, phone number and location of where you would like to drop the toilet. Want To Take The Plunge Into Lake Of The Ozarks?

ItÃ¢ï¿½ï¿½s easy and for a good cause! Raise a minimum of $75 and enter into the Plunge. Dig out an old Halloween costume or come up with some crazy outfit and have fun while diving into the Lake of the Ozarks at Public Beach No. 2 in Osage Beach. Register for the Plunge at noon on February 25. The Parade of Costumes begins at 2 p.m. where all of the Plungers walk to the beach where they will take the plunge into the Lake. The first heat to the Plunge begins at 2:30 p.m.

Costumes are judged at the Plunge. They are awarded in various categories Ã¢ï¿½ï¿½ broken down by individual, team, law enforcement, and schools. As always, the legendary Golden Plunger will be given to the school, team, law enforcement officer and individual judged as having the best costume.

DonÃ¢ï¿½ï¿½t Want To Plunge? Do The Strut!

Run or walk the 3.1 mile course in Osage Beach. Doors open at 8 a.m. for registration at the Osage Beach City Hall. The Strut starts at 10 a.m. Raise a minimum of $50 by Feb. 8 and you will receive an event shirt.

The Super Plunge

How does jumping in the Lake 24 times sound? Crazy, right? Well a group made up of 12 people are registered to take part in the annual Super Plunge this year. To participate in The Super Plunge, each person had to raise a minimum of $2,500 to participate. They stay on houseboats docked at the marina at the Lake of the Ozarks State Park and start jumping in around 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 25. They jump into the Lake every hour throughout the rest of the day and night, finishing up with the first plunge of the Polar Plunge.

All the Super Plunge spots are filled. Recruiting for a spot as a Super Plunger begins approximately six months prior to the event.

One of the Super PlungerÃ¢ï¿½ï¿½s is Osage Beach Police Officer, Sgt. Mike O'Day. He plans to jump into the freezing waters of the Lake of the Ozarks 24 times in 24 hours. This will be Sgt. O'Day's second year to participate in the Super Plunge, although he has participated in the Polar Plunge for several years.

Sgt. O'Day will be hosting a basketball tournament to help him reach this goal. This event will be held on Saturday, Jan. 29 at 2 p.m. at Camdenton Middle School. The cost is $50 a team (minimum of 5 per team) or $10 for an individual. Along with the tournament there will be concessions, door prizes and a silent auction. All proceeds raised at this event will put Sgt. O'Day that much closer to his $2,500 goal. If you are interested in participating in this event, please contact Sgt.O'Day at 573-230-1894. The After Party

The Post Plunge/Strut Party will be at Tan-Tar-A Resort starting at 4 p.m. on Feb. 25. Polar participants get in free, one of their guests can gain admission for $5. The rest of the public is $10 at the door. A silent and live auction run by Rick Bryant will be held. Items are needed and still being collected. Cops on Top

Another way the Osage Beach Department of Public Safety helps raise money for the Special Olympics Missouri is by soliciting donations from on top of the Hy-Vee gas station. Local law enforcement officers will be stationed on top of the roof asking those passing by to place donations into a bucket. They will be holding the event Feb. 18 from 6 a.m.-6 p.m.

Polar Bear Plunge Rules

Minimum total must be turned in by date of Plunge. Bring proof of online registration or your registration form and collected donations to the event.

Attire: Participants can wear anything but a wet suit and must wear shoes and at least a swimsuit.

Minimum age: Must be at least 10 years old and anyone under 14 must be accompanied by an adult, who must attend the event. The Lake of the Ozarks Polar Bear Strut has no age minimum.

Decorate your dock for the holidays during this first-time event at the Lake!

Dock Realty is hosting the lake area's first annual dock lighting contest called "Deck the Docks" to benefit the Dogwood Animal Shelter.

Dogwood animal shelter is a non-profit, no-kill refuge for the homeless domesticated animals in the Lake of the Ozarks area. Their facility houses 200 of our furry friends that are waiting for that loving family to adopt them. Community participation is crucial to make this a successful event so gather your friends and co-workers to join us on one of the five Friday night cruises aboard the Celebration. The cruises begin on November 25th and run every Friday evening until December 23rd. The cruise is 2 hours long and includes viewing the lighted docks between the 13 and 21 miles markers.

Homeowner's are being asked to take their holiday lighting one step further and decorate their docks. You will need to register your dock if you want to be considered in the judging of this new and exciting contest. If you do not want to be considered for judging, that's okay, just please still decorate your dock for all to enjoy.

Organizers need more local businesses to get involved! Sponsorship packages are available and they are looking for additional prizes to award to winners. 18th Annual Enchanted Village of Lights

The 18th Annual Enchanted Village of Lights at Laurie's 27-acre fairgrounds delights visitors with more than 200 holiday displays. Over 2,600 vehicles and 8,111 people visited the Enchanted Village last year. The Village is open Nov. 19 - Jan. 1 from 5-9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 5-10 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays and holidays. Admission is free, although donations will be accepted.

"People come from all over the region to see the Village of Lights and we're adding a ton of LED lights and a few displays this year," said Susann Huff, events coordinator for the city of Laurie. "It's truly worth the trip to Laurie to see our holiday lights display."

Every fall, a small committee of dedicated Lake area residents, known as the Christmas for Kids Committee, partners with the Kiwanis Club of Ozark Coast and together they begin soliciting sponsors, donations, and volunteers for one of their biggest fund raising events of the year: Lake Area Christmas for Kids (CFK).

This year's benefit, scheduled for Sunday, December 11, beginning at 7 p.m., will be held at the Country Club Hotel & Spa. Since its inception 18 years ago, the annual event has raised approximately $500,000 in cash donations and proceeds from the silent auction.

Entry for the event is open to the public and is $10 and one unwrapped new toy.

Last year's event drew some 600 people and the proceeds helped nearly 500 children and their families. Each child was granted as many as 2 toys from their wish list and cash vouchers for use at area thrift stores for more personal needs. The event includes horsd'oeuvres, a cash bar, the silent auction and entertainment and dancing by the popular band Members Only.

The event also provides assistance to seven local charities: Hope House, CADV (Citizens Against Domestic Violence), Camp Wonderland, Kid's Harbor, Big Brothers-Big Sisters, Tri-County YMCA, Share the Harvest and Lake Regional Pediatrics.

The Shrine of St. Patrick's Festival of Lights

The Shrine of St. Patrick's Festival of Lights celebrates its 30th anniversary this season. Started by Father Fred Barnett, the Festival of Lights was the first official holiday lights display at the Lake. The Festival of Lights is located both at the Shrine of St. Patrick and the National Shrine of Mary, Mother of the Church, in Laurie. The Festival begins on Thanksgiving Day and runs through New Year's Day. Hours are 6-10 p.m. each evening and admission is free.

20th Annual Ha Ha Tonka State Park Haunt

Ozark Ghost Stories & Other Scary Tales

The 1931 Troupe presents "Ozark Ghost Stories and Other Scary Tales" starring Sylvia Thompson on Friday night, October 28, at 6:30 pm. This outdoor theatrical Halloween event, at The White House on the Bagnell Dam Strip in Lake Ozark, also features a cast of costumed performers from The 1931 Troupe ensemble.

In its third year "Ozark Ghost Stories" transforms a portion of the Strip's landscape into an outdoor theater. With witches by the bonfire, as night falls in around them, readers will interpret stories sure to scare.

Thompson, known for her benevolence and participation in the local arts community, her many roles in theater and music, both on and off stage, and her variety of interests and travels outside of the art world, has appeared in each previous production of "Ozark Ghost Stories and Other Scary Tales."

Along with featuring Thompson in the starring role, director Maggie Walker has added more theatrical touches than in past years, presenting the readings as staged productions. Plot, character, mystery, thrills and chills are in store for those looking for Halloween memories and surprises.

There is limited seating at this family-friendly show, but additional room for lawn chairs is plentiful. Admission is free, and a hospitality table will offer a variety of sweet and other tasty treats of the season. For more information, contact Old Time Photos at 573-365-5244.

Osage Beach Premium Outlet Mall Trick or Treat

Starting at 4pm, children aged 12 and under who are suitably dressed up in spooky and ghoulish costumes can walk around the Premium mall shopping outlet trick or treating: a list of participating stores at the mall can be collected from information centre at the entrance. There will also be a fancy dress costume contest with lots of great prizes and children dressed up in Halloween costumes gain an automatic entry.

The area's 10th annual event, which will take place 4 p.m.-1:30 a.m.on Saturday, Feb. 19 this year, is sure to break all records.

Recently the Viagra Falls Band added a profile to our website. Since we like to promote the talent around the lake, we never charge the bands to be listed on our site and allow them to post all their gigs on the calendar. When a band takes advantage of putting their profile on the site, I get notified and of course send them a welcome message with instructions on how to use the features of the site for their self promotion. During the course of these emails, George Blowfish, the publist for Viagra Falls Band, sent me this email. After picking myself up off the floor from laughing so hard, I thought I'd share it with you all.

Hi Debra:

Viagra Falls gigs are like World Wars. They are epic, but its not a good idea to have too many of them.

Actually, it's an interesting story. Allow me to painfully labor you with it.

Back around ten years ago, yours truly and three good friends of mine, Gary, Mr. Cheesewhizz (both members of Viagra Falls) and Mr. Doggity (our Reuben Kincaid-like agent) wanted to have a boys camp out weekend, away from our city lives, families and responsibilities. We started, just the four of us, going to Eminence, MO and the Jacks Fork River to play poker, drink, play a little music, drink, smoke a cigar or two, drink, and not worry about our hygiene much. Cheesewhizz and me, well, we used to play tunes together at Mizzou back in the late 1970s and we even wrote some songs together, so we go way back. Gary was the best man at my wedding. Mr. Doggity and I have been pals since 8th grade. So we're all tight, so to speak.

The first year, one night we sat on the banks of the Jacks Fork river doing songs, and annoying/entertaining the other campers. No sound system, just a couple guitars, my voice and Mr. Doggity banging a spoon against a plastic pig. You can't buy that kind of entertainment anywhere at any price. I know, I've tried.

Our weekend trip has become a yearly autumn sojourn. Over the years more and more of our pals have joined us for what we now call "The Weekend of Mass Destruction" or "WMD." We love the Lake, because some of us are from KC, some are from St. Louis, and some from points beyond who can fly to KC or St. Louis. Rusty, our guitarist, was Mr. Doggity's brother in law before a divorce. It's OK, we got custody of Rusty and the plastic pig after the divorce and Doggity's ex is cool with that. Our drummer Vince is an old pal of Mr. Cheesewhizz, and is one of the nicest, down to earth guys I know. And he's one Hell of a photographer to boot.

See, that's the thing. All of us have been scattered to the winds. We all have day jobs in advertising, or manufacturing, or industrial safety, or whatever. Except Gary. He's now retired and we all hate him very much for that. Each guy has some musical talent, but luckily some more than others. Rusty, Vince, Gary and Cheezewhizz are legit, experienced, extremely talented musicians. And me, well, I'm the band's comic relief basically. I sing because I'm too fat to ski.

We'll also be playing this year with MJ Hulsey, who is a music teacher in Stover, MO. She saved our bacon last year by bringing us some drums at the 11th hour (our drum kit didn't make it out of KC in a horrible packing accident) and we were all taken by her talent. So we're looking forward to seeing her again and playing some tunes with her. She's fabulous.

Our entourage has grown to somewhere between 20 to 30 WMDers at times, some traveling as far as California and Chicago. So we've taken to staying at a Lake Resort to house us all in one place. The one we like is about 200 yards from Neighbor's Landing, where we play our gig. That way we stay off the road and out of trouble. It's only fun until someone gets hurt. So we try very hard to avoid serious injury, roadside sobriety drills, paternity suits or other messy litigation.

The good folks at Neighbor's have had us play the bar four years now. We always have a blast and try to put on a humorous and musically kick ass show. We like the people who frequent the bar, and love being able to do our thing. Because in truth we're trying to entertain ourselves as well. We usually practice for about a half an hour before the show. Can you tell?

That's our story. Fascinating, huh?

09/30/2010 - 31st Annual Old Tyme Apple Festival - Versailles, MO

Fall at Lake of the Ozarks, it's hard to believe that it's here already. Not just because it seems the Summer flew by, but also because the weather here is fantastic and the lake temperature is still warm enough for a swim.

With the Fall Seasons comes a great opportunity to get outside and enjoy the season. Fall means Apples, and the City of Versailles is holding the 31st Annual Old Tyme Apple Festival on Saturday, October 2, 2010. As the city of Versailles turns 175, the Old Tyme Apple Festival, which typically attracts 30,000-plus visitors, will celebrate with the theme, "American As Apple Pie." Appropriately, one of the event's highlights will be the apple-pie baking contest; entries will be accepted on Friday, Oct. 1, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Morgan County Courthouse. Winners will be announced the next day at noon, followed by a lively apple pie auction, at Monroe and Jasper Streets. The Apple King and Queen will be crowned at 5:30 p.m., Friday, at the courthouse, and the Baby Dumpling and Apple Dumplin & Darlin contests will be held starting at 6:30 p.m., Friday, at the First Baptist Church.

Many of the 100-plus entries in the always anticipated Apple Festival Parade, starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, will be decked out in bright red apple finery. The parade, departing from Brown Road at Hwy. 52 and winding through downtown Versailles, will include more than 80 floats, plus clowns, bands, horses, classic cars and much more; it usually lasts about one and one-half hours.

Naturally, apples will be prominently featured among the 450-plus food and crafts vendors who will set up shop from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. in downtown Versailles. Other delectable food will be available at the Pancake Breakfast, starting at 6:30 a.m., Saturday, at the Westminster Presbyterian Church, and at the German Dinner at 11 a.m., Saturday, at Grace Lutheran Church.

By popular demand, a competition to create large, three-dimensional apple sculptures by regional artists and artisans will return to the Apple Festival for the second year. Last year's winning sculpture by welder Ric Davenport - a two-foot by two-foot, three-dimensional apple fashioned of aluminum--will be installed on a four-foot concrete at the Chamber's "mini-orchard" at the junction of Highways 5 and 52. Prizes will be $250 for first place, $150 second place, $75 third place.

*A Burnout contest, in which drivers spin their wheels to create the largest amount of smoke, is set for 7 p.m. at D&R Auto.

On Saturday:

*Wake up early for the 5K and Super Senior 5K Runs (7 a.m.), the 2-Mile Walk (7:15 a.m.), and the half-mile Kids Fun Run (8 a.m.), all at Versailles High School.

*At 9 a.m., the Kids Fun Zone will open at 9 a.m. on North Monroe Street and the Tractor & Engine Display will open on Newton Street.

*A juried Quilt Show will be on display at the Hunter Civic Center from 12-5 p.m.

*The fascinating circa-1877 Morgan County Historical Society Museum will offer discounted tours, 12-4 p.m.

*The Big Boys Toys Car Club will sponsor its popular annual Car, Truck and Motorcycle Show at Versailles City Park; registration will start at 8 a.m. and awards will be presented at 4 p.m.

*And the annual Tractor Show, starting at 8 a.m. at Ozark Wheels, will bring together some of the area's best antique and collectible tractors.

Theatre and music also will be offered in conjunction with the festival. "White Christmas," the musical based on the beloved 1940 holiday song by Irving Berlin, will be performed at 7 p.m. On October 1 & 2 at the historic Royal Theatre, tickets will be $10 for adults, $5 for children and students. The roots and rockabilly band Rumblestrip will be featured on the main stage from 11 a.m.-12 p.m., and 1-5 p.m. Other country, gospel and blues bands will perform on several stages in the downtown area throughout the day. A crowd-pleasing Fiddlers Contest also will be held at 1 p.m. at the Royal Theater; admission will be $1. This judged event attracts fiddlers from all over the region, including children and old-timers.

The festival's grand finale will be a Compact-Car Figure 8 Race and "Tuff" Truck Challenge, both offering cash prizes, at 7 p.m. Saturday, at the Morgan County Fairgrounds, sponsored by the Versailles Lions Club.

A 3-Person Scramble Golf Tournament at Rolling Hills Country Club will wrap up the weekend, starting at noon on Sunday.

Shuttles will provide transportation from parking lots to festival event sites for just $1 for all day Saturday. The town of Linn Creek will be holding it's14th Annual Apple Butter Days Festival on October 8-9, 2010 from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm at the Camden County Museum, located on V Road just off Highway 54 in Linn Creek.

As the Lake of the Ozarks continues it's celebration of Fall and the Apple Season, be sure to stop by and pick up some of the delicious home made Apple Butter and Apple Pies that will be offered at the festival. A lot of people are convinced that Ozarks-grown apples add a special, delectable flavor to apple butter and apple pies.

Visitors to the festival can watch or help volunteers stir the big copper kettle in which apples and sugar simmer for hours on the way to becoming mouth-watering apple butter, just as it's been made in the traditional manner through the ages. It's a very time-consuming process that usually requires up to a dozen bushels of apples, or more, so extra hands to help stir the kettle are always needed. A pint of delicious Ozarks apple butter will sell for just $5; sugar-free apple butter also will be available. And be sure to take home a fresh-baked, made-with-love Dutch apple crumb-top pie or two (including some sugar-free) for $10 each.

Stop by for lunch, featuring home-made chili and soups plus old-fashioned corn bread and irresistible desserts, all for just $5. An array of booths will offer seasonal and holiday decorations, crocheted and knitted items, home-made jellies, wood crafts, jewelry and more. Typically a bluegrass or folk musician or both provide entertainment.

Two beautiful handmade quilts, donated by friends of the Historical Society, will be raffled at 4 p.m. Saturday. All proceeds will go toward the upkeep of the unique Camden County Museum.

Throughout the festival, Historical Society volunteers will be available to answer visitors questions about the fascinating Camden County Museum. In this former circa-1930 schoolhouse, each classroom is like a mini-museum, including the Pioneer School complete with a genuine dunce cap, a vintage office and bank, scary-looking antique medical equipment donated by local doctors, old-fashioned household items and furniture, tools from the past, Civil War memorabilia, Osage Indian artifacts and other intriguing collections.

There is no admission charge to attend the event, just come hungry and take advantage of the delicious goodies available to you.

With the summer boating season offically over, many of us are already having withdrawal. Even though the weather is fantastic, the lake is quiet, and many are missing out on some of the best boating The Lake of the Ozarks has to offer. The 25th Annual Fall Harbor Hop is just around the corner. Taking place on October 9th, the Harbor Hop is a great way to spend the day out on the water. As many as 2,600 "hoppers" have been counted during the one day event. Many dress in costumes, going from waterfront bars and marinas to draw their next card to complete a seven card hand. Even children can participate. The Harbor Hop takes place rain or shine! All the proceeds go toward promoting the Lake of the Ozarks. The event is sponsored by The Lake of the Ozarks Convention & Visitors Bureau, Lake of the Ozarks Marine Dealers Association and the Lake of the Ozarks Waterfront Restaurants. Here's How It Works: You can enter the Harbor Hop by stopping at any of the participating checkpoints listed below. To obtain a hand, sign up and pay an optional $15.00 donation (per seven card hand). A player may enter more than once. The first card is drawn at the checkpoint where the hand is purchased; 6 additional cars are obtained by "hopping" to six more checkpoints drawing one card, per hand, at each location. An optional 8th Bonus card can be drawn for an additional $5.00. The completed hand is turned in at the checkpoint where your last card is drawn. Winners will be notified by mail. Prizes are based on entry donations. The Lae of the Ozarks Convention & Visitor Bureau will retain 60% for administering the program and promoting Lake of the Ozarks. Thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts will enjoy music including concerts by rockers Bad Company with Brian Howe and Molly Hatchet plus vendors, scenic rides, contests, competitions and camaraderie at the 4th annual 2010 BikeFest at Central Missouri's Lake of the Ozarks, Sept. 16-19.

Event promoters are expecting thousands of riders and friends at this popular, activity-packed, four-day event. The action will take place at the Lake Expo Center in Osage Beach, Lake of the Ozarks Harley-Davidson in Osage Beach and the Full Throttle Midwest Magazine Party Compound at Toad Cove in Lake Ozark. Area restaurants and nightspots also will sponsor special BikeFest activities.

"The Lake of the Ozarks is an ideal location in the central United States for hosting a motorcycle event," says Tim Jacobsen, director of the Lake of the Ozarks Convention & Visitor Bureau. Monday Morning Search for Breakfast on the Water

With the weekend over, a Monday off work,and good friends still in town, we decided to take advantage of the calm water and head out in search of Breakfast on the water. This is an easy feat on the weekend as several waterfront locations serve breakfast on Saturday and Sundays. Not so easy on a Monday, especially when you want to try some place different than our "usual" stops.

So we loaded up the boat with a hungry crew and headed up the lake. Since we start from the 3 Mile Marker on the main channel, very rarely do we go past the 13 Mile Mark, but today we decided to head on up the lake and take advantage of the calm water and lack of boat traffic. We also had no plan or specific location in mind. We just decided to hop our way up the lake until we found a great breakfast spot.

After stopping at several locations, only to learn that they were either closed or didn't serve breakfast on the week days, we landed at Paradise on the 24 MM. We were greeted at the dock by a very helpful dock hand and told that they serve breakfast every day. Good thing, because we were really hungry by then and extremely hot from the excessive heat and humidity taking place this month.

Once the boat was secure, we started our long ascent up several flights of steps to the restaurant. It's a great place with lots of open air decks, complete with a lot of fans to help keep you cool and comfortable. The actual inside seating was a little to stuffy from the heat so we enjoyed the deck and the great view of the lake.

The menu offered a lot of possibilities and there were several options to choose from, but the Crab Cakes Benedict caught my eye. I love crab, but have never been a big fan of crab cakes. However something about the Crab Cakes, Eggs, Hollandaise Sauce all on an English Muffin was just to tempting to pass up. I'm so glad I ordered it...It was fantastic!

Everyone enjoyed their breakfast and the service was great, we all decided that this trip up the lake is definitely worth it and we would be back to check out the lunch and dinner menus as well as the entertainment in the near future.

If you find yourself in the area of Paradise, I highly recommend that you stop off, have a drink and a bite to eat, you won't regret it.
